In an effort to give back and supply troops, the late John Ek built custom knives with the help of employed disabled veterans. The knives built by Ek Commando Knife Company immediately built a reputation for the use in utility and close quarters combat, and eventually found their way into the posession of Franklin D. Roosvelt, George S. Patton, and others. In 2015, Ka-Bar purchased the Ek Commando Knife Co., and in an effort to preserve the legacy, still manufactures Ek branded knives.
